Anti-Euro Protesters Attempt to Storm EU Building in Bulgaria

Thousands of supporters of the far-right Vizrajdane (Rebirth) Party protested the government’s plans to use the euro next year in front of a building belonging to the European Commission in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.

After throwing red paint and Molotov cocktails at the EU building and starting a fire, a scuffle broke out between them and the police. Bulgarian authorities reported that 10 police officers were slightly injured and six people were detained during the incidents.

“We do not want Bulgaria’s financial independence to be destroyed. We demand the preservation of the Bulgarian lev,” Rebirth Party leader Kostadin Kostadinov told the media.

Some Bulgarians are hesitant to adopt the euro as their currency because they fear that it could lead to uncontrolled price increases similar to those experienced in Croatia in 2023.
