A large-scale police operation in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas left 64 people dead, including four police officers, and 81 detained. Authorities said four civilians were injured, and 31 automatic rifles along with large amounts of narcotics were seized.
Governor Claudio Castro said 2,500 security personnel took part as criminals used drones to drop explosives on police. The raid, targeting the Red Command gang, comes ahead of major global events in Brazil, including the COP30 climate summit and the C40 mayors’ meeting.
