Anti-Racist Protests Sweep Germany Against Far-Right AfD

Massive anti-racist demonstrations swept across Germany as over 50,000 people in Cologne and 100,000 in Munich rallied against the far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany) Party’s controversial plans to deport all foreigners. Organized by the Cologne Stellt Sich Quer formation, supported by various sectors, including unions, NGOs, athletes, churches, politicians, and even FC Köln’s players and managers, the protests, themed “Protect democracy, fight against AfD,” featured signs declaring “Cologne hates AfD,” “Nazis out,” “Never again,” and “Nationalism is nonsense.” The events also witnessed speeches against racism and performances by renowned music groups. The sheer turnout disrupted tram services near the Cologne demonstration. Simultaneously, around 100,000 people gathered in Berlin at the Reichstag to voice their opposition to AfD’s deportation plans. Similar demonstrations occurred in Munich and other cities, with the Munich protest being cut short due to security concerns arising from the overwhelming crowd. The anti-racist alliance’s call prompted large and small protests nationwide.
