The anti-vaccine truck drivers had been gathered up on January 29 to protests against the mandatory vaccination and Coronavirus (COVID-19) measures, under the name of “Freedom Convoy” in Canada. The anti-vaccination protests launched by truck drivers in Canada spread to the US-Canada border. In a statement made by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), it’s been stated that truck drivers have closed the Ambassador Bridge connecting the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of Michigan. But according to the police, arrivals from the US to Canada are open. The Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra stated that he is closely monitoring the situation.

After the incident, the bridge’s operator the Detroit International Bridge Company (DIBC) state that international trade on the bridge should be restarted. “We encourage the appropriate officials to take prompt action to alleviate the situation as quickly as possible in a manner that reflects mutual respect,” said Manuel Moroun, the Chairman of the DIBC.

On the other hand, the truck drivers’, who arrived the capital Ottawa on January 29, continuously honking their horns in the 10 days of protest, caused a reaction from the residents. Ontario Superior Court Judge Hugh McLean banned truck drivers from honking in protest for the next 10 days because of the noise. “Tooting a horn is not an expression of any great thought,” McLean said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
