The Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology announced on Thursday that significant archaeological discoveries were made at the Shimao Site in China’s Shaanxi Province in 2022. The remains are from a 4,300-year-old neolithic city that was abandoned some 300 years later during the Xia Dynasty (2100-1600 BC), China’s first dynasty mentioned in historical chronicles. Archaeologists uncovered high-grade cemeteries and 15 vertical pit graves going back about 4,000 years in the central region of Shimao Site.
“I am now in a relatively large vertical tomb. It has a depth of more than 6 meters. These bones are believed to be from young women. It’s obvious that the skeleton is thin. The teeth are well preserved. The skull is not big. The women were less than thirteen or fourteen years old,” explains, Shao Jing, Researcher.
