After 95 percent of the votes were counted in the second round of the Guatemalan Presidential Elections, left-wing candidate Bernardo Arevalo was elected to be the new leader of the country. Arevalo outran his rival, former first lady Sandra Torres, with an overwhelming 59 percent of the vote. After the results came, his supporters took to the streets and squares to celebrate their new leader.
Arevalo, who promised to fight crime and corruption before the election, said, “Enough corruption,” in the first statement he made after the results were announced.
