A drug factory operated by the Assad family near Damascus has been exposed following the fall of the regime. Once a chip manufacturing plant, the facility was converted in 2017 under the control of Maher Assad to produce narcotics, including Captagon pills, generating billions of dollars annually.
The drugs, hidden in items like electrical panels and artificial fruits, were smuggled to Gulf and European countries. This illicit trade became a major source of revenue for the Assad regime, despite U.S. sanctions.
Local resident Arif El Dud expressed hope for Syria’s future, stating, “We didn’t want these drugs to harm innocent people,” as opposition forces secured the factory.
