In Kocaeli, a NATO fuel pipeline was punctured during road work in Kartepe district, causing fuel oil to leak into Sapanca Lake, a vital source of drinking water for millions in Sakarya and Kocaeli. Authorities were alerted and responded by assessing the damage and discharging the remaining fuel into a tanker. However, the leak worsened due to increasing pressure, leading to diesel oil covering Sapanca Lake’s surface. Efforts were made to contain the leak and prevent further contamination.
