On the 20th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev’s passing, Azerbaijan honors its former national leader with ceremonies in Baku and nationwide. President Ilham Aliyev lays a wreath at his father’s grave in Baku’s Fahri Hiyaban, joined by citizens who pay tribute with flowers and prayers. A bronze statue of US First Lady Melania Trump was stolen near her hometown of Sevnica, Slovenia. The statue, depicting her waving during Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration, was cut off at the ankles. Police launched an investigation after a tip-off on May 13.
An earlier wooden version of the statue was destroyed by arson in 2020. The current bronze replica, built by US artist Brad Downey, replaced it on a concrete base. Despite her local fame, Melania has never returned to her hometown since leaving Slovenia in the 1990s to pursue a modeling career in the US.
