Germany is setting up a massive “fan zone” on 17 June Street in Berlin, from the Brandenburg Gate to Ernst Reuter Square, in preparation for EURO 2024. The area will feature artificial turf and the “world’s largest football goal.” The fan zone, which will be ready by May 26, will allow tens of thousands of fans to watch matches on a giant screen and enjoy entertainment programs on non-match days.
However, environmentalists have criticized the artificial turf, citing ecological concerns about micro and nanoplastics. Organizers have assured that the turf is safe and recyclable, with plans to reuse it in various locations after the championship. The project costs 1.2 million Euros and will close the street to traffic for three months.
