After the new Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sworn in on January 1, supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress building in the capital, Brasilia. The demonstrators entered the National Congress with Brazilian flags in their hands and Brazilian police responded with tear gas.
Lula had won the election with 50.9 percent of the vote, while Bolsonaro received 49.1 percent. Bolsonaro’s supporters gathered in front of barracks across the country for weeks, demanding that the armed forces intervene in the situation.
