Cihan Dede, a bookseller in Malatya, eastern Türkiye, has turned his container shop into a shelter for stray cats during harsh winter conditions. After his original shop was demolished following the February 6 earthquakes, Dede divided his container to create a warm space for more than 20 cats. “I both earn my living and take care of the animals,” he said, adding that he treats sick cats with his own means when needed. Dede noted that winter makes life harder, with high electricity bills to keep heaters running, but said support from philanthropists helps sustain the effort.
