The centuries-old tradition of firing cannons during iftar and sahur in Bursa’s historic Tophane district has been replaced with sound bombs due to environmental concerns.

Firefighters from the Bursa Metropolitan Fire Department now detonate sound bombs near the Tophane Clock Tower at prayer times, continuing the Ottoman-era custom in a modern way. While some are startled by the change, the new method has become an anticipated part of Ramadan.

The old cannons, once used for announcing prayer times, now serve as historical displays, drawing interest from tourists.
