An armed attack was carried out on the tourist resort La Palapa in the city of Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. At least six members of Mexico’s most violent criminal group, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), fled the scene after shooting some visitors and setting fire to the facility. According to the authorities, the group killed 2 people by shooting and burning one, while injuring 8 others.
After the attack, a poster with threatening statements was hung at the facility. On the banner, CJNG claimed responsibility for the attack, and the facility’s owner was threatened with death. The owner of La Palapa is allegedly related to a different cartel. While the attackers of the incident have yet to be caught, the Guanajuato State Prosecutor’s Office has declared that an investigation has been initiated and multi-faceted operations have been organized.
