Thirteen people lost their lives in the forest fires that occurred in many parts of Chile, especially in the Nuble and Biobio regions, due to the recent heat wave affecting the country. A pilot and a technician in a firefighting aircraft died after crashing into the ground. A firefighter also died while performing their duty.
Toha announced that a red alert was declared in Nuble and Biobio, and 7 natural parks in the capital Santiago and some parts of Chile were temporarily closed by the order of the ministry due to the fire hazard.
Chilean Interior Minister Carolina Toha said that 65 of the 192 fires recorded earlier yesterday have been brought under control, but the forecast for the next couple days poses danger.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric said there were “signs” indicating that some of the fires may have been set on purpose. Fourteen thousand hectares have turned to ashes so far.
