China launches ballistic missiles near Taiwan territorial waters

Following the visit to Taiwan of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) began an exercise in which real missiles and bullets were used at six points closest to Taiwan. The Taiwan Ministry of Defense said in a statement, “The Chinese People’s Liberation Army launched a large number of Dongfeng ballistic missiles into our territorial waters in the northeast and southwest at 13:56 local time. As our defense systems were activated, we monitored the situation with various means. We condemn such unreasonable actions that jeopardize regional peace.”

According to a statement issued by the China Eastern Operational Area Command, long-range missiles were fired using real ammunition, and targets in eastern Taiwan were successfully hit by launching various types of conventional missiles. According to Chinese state media, various types of missiles, including Dongfeng-17 medium-range hypersonic missiles and Dongfeng-11 short-range ballistic missiles, will be used during the exercises, which will last until July 7.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
