At a joint press conference in Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized a unified stance on European security, Russian aggression, and migration.

Chancellor Merz declared, “Russia poses a threat to the security of the entire alliance,” and confirmed that NATO will approve a historic defense spending increase at its summit later this month. He stressed that this is being done in Europe’s own interest, not at Washington’s request.

Merz expressed support for the EU’s proposed 18th sanctions package against Moscow, calling Russia’s bombardment of Ukrainian civilians “unacceptable.” He said the EU aims to finalize the package next week and expects consensus at the G7 summit in Canada.

Calling for a reduction in illegal border crossings, Merz said Germany’s capacity to integrate migrants is nearing its limit. Frederiksen echoed the sentiment, stating, “We can’t accept everyone who comes to Europe.”

Frederiksen warned that the war in Ukraine could spread to other parts of Europe. “There is no other alternative. We have to rearm, and we have to do it quickly,” she said. Both leaders stressed strengthening sanctions and military readiness.

Addressing US interest in Greenland, Merz said, “We stand by our Danish friends.” Frederiksen added, “Only the people of Greenland can decide the future of Greenland.”
Merz also commented on the easing of US-China rare earth restrictions, noting it’s not harmful to Europe, and expressed hope for resolving transatlantic trade issues.

Merz called the recent violent incidents in Los Angeles “disturbing,” expressing hope for a swift resolution.
