Cliffside House Becomes Symbol of Türkiye’s Hidden Gem Kemaliye

Kemaliye, a scenic district in Türkiye’s Erzincan province, draws nearly 50,000 visitors each summer—ten times its population—thanks to its historic charm, natural beauty, and thrilling outdoor sports. Listed as a “cittaslow” (quiet city), Kemaliye is home to the world-renowned Dark Canyon and its 7-kilometer cliffside stone road with 38 tunnels and a zipline, attracting motorcyclists and adventure seekers alike.

Among its unique landmarks is a cliffside house built by retired teachers Nermin and Bekir Taştan using only basic tools and a homemade cable car. Perched atop 96 steps, the house has become a district icon and even featured in the Turkish comedy “Düğün Dernek 2.” With attractions like rafting, hiking, and cultural heritage sites, Kemaliye stands out as a must-visit destination in eastern Türkiye.

National swimmer Bengisu Avcı has made history as the first Turkish swimmer and the 38th globally to complete the “Ocean’s 7” course, which consists of seven of the world’s toughest marathon swims. Speaking from Tokyo, Avcı described her success in the Tsugaru Strait in Japan, where she swam 57 kilometers in 14.5 hours, far exceeding the strait’s 19 km distance due to challenging currents.

Avcı, who made a mark by pushing through despite setbacks where male athletes gave up, expressed pride in her achievement, calling it a symbol of the resilience of Turkish women. “Let the name Bengisu Avcı be a gift to Turkish athletes,” she said, adding that she aims to inspire future swimmers.

Looking ahead, Avcı plans to continue training athletes while preparing for ice swimming competitions, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the sport after years of hard work.
