Climate activists protested against the expansion of the coal mine in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Hundreds of climate activists protested the demolition of the village of Luetzerath in order to expand the Garzweiler mine, run by energy firm RWE. They blocked RWE’s vehicles trying to enter the area.
Some demonstrators sat in the pits they dug, while others climbed onto the wooden structures they had built. The police detained the protesters after warning them to disperse.
