The Rota Nature Sports Society, which organizes events to promote Türkiye’s Lake Van Basin and raise awareness of nature, held its third trip last week. Mountaineers climbed the Meydan Caldera and Gürgürbaba Hill, located 7 kilometers northwest of Erciş, north of Lake Van. They observed the crater lake from an altitude of 2,320 meters and determined that the lake was nearly dry. Climate change and drought are both estimated to be the causes of the second-largest volcanic lake in the area drying up.
