Czech Republic begins checks at border with Slovakia

The Czech Republic began 10-day temporary checks on its border with Slovakia due to the sharp increase in the number of migrants, mostly Syrian, trying to reach Germany. The driver was neutralized while police opened fire on the vehicle carrying 15 immigrants attempting to flee the checkpoint.

Since the beginning of this year, Czech police have arrested about 12,000 immigrants on the territory of the country. This figure significantly exceeds the figures of 2015, when the migration crisis in Europe was at its peak.

WWII Bomb Scare Triggers Mass Evacuation in Cologne

0

In Cologne, Germany, 20,500 people were evacuated after three unexploded World War II bombs were discovered during roadworks in the Deutz district. Authorities launched the city’s largest evacuation since 1945 to safely defuse the bombs, which included two one-ton and one 500-kg US-made devices.

The operation affected 58 hotels, 9 schools, a hospital, nursing homes, and museums. Three bridges over the Rhine, rail lines, and ship traffic were temporarily shut down. Bomb disposal teams from Düsseldorf worked to defuse the bombs during the day. Such wartime bomb finds remain common in Germany, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia.
