New Orleans Medical Examiner Dr. Dwight McKenna announced that the number of people who died in the vehicle attack targeting New Year’s Eve celebrations on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, has risen to 15. McKenna also said that the identities of those who died would be announced after autopsies, which will take several days.
The attacker, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, rammed into the crowd in the area with his pickup truck and got out of his vehicle and opened fire before being shot dead by police. It was reported that he had “deliberately acted” and “tried to run over as many people as possible.”
The FBI announced that the incident would be investigated as an “act of terrorism.”
