Death toll in flood increased to 1,314 in Pakistan: Casualties face various diseases

The current death toll in the flood incident in Pakistan has risen to 1,314, including 450 children. Monsoon rains drowned 1 out of 3 of the country. The flood affected lives of nearly 33 million Pakistani. Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif demanded the investigation of the child deaths from UNICEF and other organizations. Its reported that the flood caused at least $12m worth of damage.

The flood caused hundreds to get various diseases. Health officials in Pakistan stated that the diseases result from lack of fresh water.

“More than 134,000 cases of diarrhea and 44,000 cases of malaria have been reported in the province.” says Azra Pechuho, Minister of Health in state Sind. She also said that over 100,000 skin related diseases were reported and there is an increase of respiratory tract related disease cases.

United Nations Population Fund reported that there are at least 650,000 pregnant women, among which 73,000 is expected to give birth this month, that require health services. UNFPA also warned about that the young and adult women who lost their houses in flood is under a possible sexual assault threat.
