The death toll from the stampede during a Hindu ritual in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras region has risen to 116, authorities reported. The tragic incident occurred as the crowd surged towards the stage to touch a cleric descending after the event. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath confirmed the cause of the stampede.
Police have launched an investigation and vowed to take action against those responsible. State Police Commissioner Prashant Kumar stated that officials’ negligence will be examined, with a report expected within 24 hours.
