Japanese authorities announced that the body of one of the two police officers who were swept away by floodwaters during heavy rainfall in Yamagata and Akita prefectures on Thursday has been found, bringing the death toll to 3. The search continues for one more missing person, they added.
The floodwaters submerged at least 1,260 structures, including 1,100 in Yamagata prefecture and 160 in Akita prefecture, and damaged numerous roads and bridges.
