dozens of households destroyed in fire at refugee camp in Chile

The fire in the Laguna Verde refugee camp in Iquique, Chile, destroyed at least 100 homes, leaving more than 400 people homeless and injuring more than 15, local authorities reported. Extinguishing the flames was difficult due to overcrowding, narrow access roads to settlements, and a lack of water supply. While authorities stated that the fire may have started as a result of the extremely hot weather experienced during the day, they also stated that no one was killed or seriously injured. The National Emergency Office (ONEMI) of the Ministry of Interior issued a yellow alert after the flames spread quickly within a few hours.

At least two schools will be converted into shelters to accommodate more than 400 homeless people in the town, which served as a temporary home for thousands of immigrants before they moved to other cities.
