Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who was tried for corruption and convicted of two different crimes, after Mexico accepted his political asylum request.
Following the operation, the political tension between the two countries rose: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador ordered the severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador, saying the operation was an outrageous violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty.
