A stampede occurring as a result of too many people trying to board trains at a train station in New Delhi, the capital of India, to attend a religious event that will end on February 26, has killed 18 people and injured 11 others.

Most of those who died died of hypoxia or blunt force trauma, and most of the injured were in stable condition and had orthopedic injuries, said Dr. Ritu Saxena, an official at the Lok Nayak Hospital in the capital.

A worker who claimed to have worked at the station since 1981 said they had never seen such a crowd before and that the crowd started colliding with each other and fell on the escalator and stairs when the train platform was suddenly changed.

Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said additional trains were being operated from New Delhi to ease congestion and a high-level investigation was being launched into the causes of the accident.
