Emergency Declared in New Zealand Amid Decade-Strong Winds

New Zealand is battling its strongest winds in a decade, prompting states of emergency in Christchurch and other regions. Schools and flights were canceled in the capital Wellington, where wind speeds reached 87 km/h. Authorities issued a red weather alert and urged residents to stay indoors. Flooding and landslides hit Christchurch, while evacuations were ordered in low-lying areas of Selwyn due to rising rivers. Strong winds and rain are expected to continue into Friday.

Budapest Hosts Turkic States Summit

Budapest is set to host the Organization of Turkic States (TDT) Informal Summit on May 20–21, marking the first time a country with observer status, Hungary, will host the event. The city has been decorated with TDT flags ahead of the summit, which will take place at the historic Varkert Bazar near the Danube.

Leaders from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Hungary are expected to attend. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will also hold bilateral talks during his visit.

The summit will focus on deepening strategic cooperation among Turkic states, with discussions on economic ties, security, and cultural heritage. The event will conclude with the adoption of the Budapest Declaration.
