EU and Türkiye Aim to Strengthen Ties: Borrell

Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy, has highlighted the mutual interest in strengthening relations between Türkiye and the EU. This followed a discussion about Türkiye at the EU Foreign Ministers Meeting. Borrell stressed the importance of easing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and resolving the Cyprus issue according to UN resolutions, while also acknowledging Türkiye’s expectations from the EU, such as revising the Customs Union agreement and visa liberalization. He also emphasized the need to uphold the fundamental freedoms outlined in the European Convention on Human Rights. Borrell stated that the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean will be crucial for reestablishing constructive relations with Türkiye.
