European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU will delay its retaliatory tariffs against the US until early August, allowing more time for negotiations.
Speaking in Brussels alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, von der Leyen said the US had outlined its planned tariff measures in a letter. While calling for a diplomatic solution, she confirmed the EU is preparing countermeasures and has approved two lists of potential retaliatory actions.
She emphasized the EU’s two-stage strategy: pushing for talks while being ready to act. Von der Leyen also noted the bloc could resort to the Anti-Coercion Instrument if needed but stated, “We are not there yet.”
“A 30% tariff on EU exports will hurt businesses and consumers on both sides,” she added, stressing efforts to reach an agreement by August 1.
