EU signs tripartite natural gas agreement with Israel and Egypt

Due to the war between Russia and Ukraine war, some countries’ efforts to reduce their energy dependency and natural gas imports from Russia continue. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Israeli Energy Minister Karine Elharrar, European Union (EU) Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, Egyptian Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Tarek El-Molla and attended in the trilateral natural gas agreement signing ceremony held in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo. “I very warmly welcome the signing of this historic agreement. This will contribute to our energy security,” Ursula von der Leyen said in her statement. In addition to that, Israeli Minister Elharrar announced that with the signed agreement, “significant” exports of Israeli gas to Europe will be allowed for the first time.

On the other hand, the EU imported 40 percent of its natural gas from Russia last year. However, the EU had decided to reduce its energy dependence on Russia due to Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. In this context, von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi went to Israel 2 days ago to discuss about energy.
