European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the €800 billion “Rearm” Europe Plan to strengthen EU defense capabilities amid the halt of US military aid to Ukraine.
Von der Leyen emphasized that Europe must take greater responsibility for its security, outlining a five-part strategy. The plan includes freeing up national defense budgets, providing €150 billion in defense investment loans, increasing EU budget allocations for military spending, and mobilizing private capital through the European Investment Bank.
She stressed that the EU is committed to a stronger defense and will continue working closely with NATO to ensure regional security.
