Deep within the heart of the Punjab region in Pakistan lies a hidden wonder, a geological marvel that has fascinated explorers and scientists for centuries – the Khewra Salt Mine. Established in the 13th century by the great Alexander the Great, the Khewra Salt Mine is the world’s second-largest salt mine and is nestled within the foothills of the magnificent Salt Range. Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander’s troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era. Naveed Malik, the Chief Mining engineer of The Khewra, tells about the history of the mine, “How it was discovered, however, not by Alexander, nor by his allies, but by his army’s horses when they were found licking the stones.”
The Khewra Salt Mine holds immense historical significance, serving as a vital source of salt production since ancient times. What makes Khewra truly unique is its geological formation. Millions of years ago, when the region was submerged under the ancient Tethys Sea, vast deposits of salt were left behind as the waters receded.

Khewra’s Therapeutic Environment for Asthma Patients:
Asthma patients typically spend about 110 hours inside the mine during treatment. The patients suffering from Asthma have to spend 6 to 8 hours in the mines in a day. The salt has antiphobic, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties. The nanoparticles of sodium absorb germs and purify the air; this purified air then enters into the lungs of the patient and creates immunity. Approximately 50 patients per annum were being treated at the Asthma Resort. Eighty percent of Asthma patients cured and treated at the resort, mostly young and self-motivated patients, used to show signs of improvement in a short period. Mr. Bilal Awan, an asthma patient, also visited the Khewra mine for the treatment of his disease and is satisfied with the services that the doctors are providing, fully equipped with expert doctors.
