A series of explosions took place during a rally organized by the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group, which took control of the city of Bukavu in the Central African country of the Democratic Republic of Congo two weeks ago after clashes with the national army, causing 11 to die and 65 others to be injured.

Corneille Nangaa, who heads the Congo River Alliance (AFC), of which M23 is a member, said that hand grenades were used in the attack.

M23, which blamed the government for the explosions, reported that some of the attackers were injured or killed and that two suspects had been captured.

“A disgusting act of terror by a foreign army illegally present on Congolese soil,” Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi said.

Mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo remains a point of conflict between different groups over control of resources such as coltan, tin, tantalum and gold.
