Twenty-one people were confirmed dead during a mountain marathon 100 km cross-country race due to extreme weather in northwest China’s Gansu Province, rescuers said on Sunday. Hails, freezing rain and high winds hit the area during the race which was held on Saturday morning in the Yellow River Stone Forest tourist site in Jingtai County, Baiyin City.

Participants suffered from physical discomfort and loss of temperature due to the sudden drop in air temperature. Another 151 participants were confirmed safe, of whom eight with minor injuries were treated in hospital
A total of 172 people took part in the race.

Severe floods triggered by heavy rains in Beijing, China, have killed 30 people and forced 80,000 to evacuate. Officials reported major infrastructure damage, with 136 villages left without power or road access. Helicopters are aiding rescue and supply efforts, while schools and tourism have been suspended.

President Xi Jinping urged local authorities to brace for “the worst and most challenging scenarios” and prioritized rescue and evacuation efforts. Meteorologists said some areas saw up to 90% of annual rainfall in just one day. A 200 million yuan ($28 million) budget was allocated for rescue and repairs.
