The U.S. Air Force confirmed the aircraft sustained severe damage, and an investigation has been launched. Commander Paul Townsend stated that efforts would be made to prevent similar incidents. The crash was caught on video, showing the jet descending before hitting the ground and exploding.

In May, another F-35 crashed after refueling in New Mexico, seriously injuring the pilot.
