Female Motorcycle Units Patrol Istanbul on Heavy Bikes

Hundreds of female officers from the Istanbul Police Department’s Preventive Services Branch are patrolling the streets as part of the elite motorcycle units, known locally as “dolphin” police. After undergoing rigorous training, these officers respond swiftly to incidents on their 270-kilogram motorcycles.

These female officers join the motorcycle units voluntarily and must meet specific height requirements: 1.80 meters for men and 1.70 meters for women. Following their selection, they undergo comprehensive training, which includes riding heavy motorcycles on challenging tracks, close defense techniques, firearm usage, vehicle searches, document forgery detection, and bomb disposal.

In addition to these skills, the officers also receive specialized training in combating narcotics, managing traffic, and crime scene investigation. This extensive preparation ensures they are well-equipped to handle various situations on the streets.

With their presence, female motorcycle unit officers provide a sense of security to citizens while deterring criminal activity. Their numbers are steadily increasing as more women complete the demanding training and join the force, reinforcing the safety and order of Istanbul.
