A fire erupted in the engine room of the Koh Charoen-2 ferry, which was en route from Surat Thani province to Koh Tao Island in Thailand. Passengers took refuge at the front of the ferry as flames quickly spread, causing panic and prompting some passengers to jump into the sea. Surrounding boats provided initial aid, rescuing 97 passengers and 11 crew members. The fire, which occurred just before the ferry’s destination, was brought under control, preventing a major disaster. Emergency teams transported affected passengers to the hospital, and the Thai Coast Guard towed the ferry to shore for investigation.
