Fissure eruption in Iceland

The government of Iceland announced on Wednesday that a volcano erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the country’s southwest. Lava began to flow from a ground fissure near Fagradalsfjall, near Grindavik. The eruption came after a period of intense seismic activity. Although the eruption is minor, the gas release could cause pollution, so the government has advised against visiting the site.

Flights to and from Iceland have not been disrupted so far, and international air traffic remains open.
