Nine victims of the 2020 racist attack in Hanau, Germany, including four Turkish nationals, were honored on the fifth anniversary of their deaths. A religious ceremony was held at Hanau Central Cemetery, where the Quran was recited and prayers were offered. The Turkish Consul General in Frankfurt, Nagihan İlknur Akdevelioğlu, and representatives from civil society organizations attended, alongside grieving families.

At an official commemoration in the Hanau Congress Center, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Hessian Prime Minister Boris Rhein met with the victims’ relatives. Steinmeier also visited the Say Their Names association, founded by the families of those killed.

On February 19, 2020, Tobias Rathjen carried out a racist attack on two cafes and a buffet, killing nine people before taking his own life. The attack remains a painful memory for Germany’s immigrant and Muslim communities.
