Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in India’s West Bengal state and neighboring Nepal have killed 68 people. In Darjeeling, 18 people died as homes and bridges were swept away, and several roads were destroyed. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said two bridges collapsed and farmlands were submerged. The tea-producing towns of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Kalimpong were among the hardest hit. In Nepal, 50 people were killed, including 37 in landslides in the eastern district of Ilam near the Indian border. Authorities warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days.
