Heavy rains in Beijing, China, between July 23 and 29 have claimed 44 lives and left nine missing, local authorities announced. Most fatalities occurred at an elderly care center in Taishitun. Officials noted that some of the missing are rescue workers.
Meteorologists said parts of the region received up to 90% of annual rainfall in a single day, overwhelming infrastructure and triggering severe flooding. The city government expressed condolences to victims’ families.
