Eight thousand hectares of land have been turned to ash due to the fires in the Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes regions, north of the city of Caceres in western Spain. Six hundred people were evacuated. Authorities say that the fire may have broken out as a result of arson.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System, 307,000 hectares burned in 493 fires in Spain last year.
