The forest fire that started 4 days ago in Ofunato city in Japan’s Iwate prefecture and caused the death of 1 person has reduced 1,400 hectares of land to ashes, according to authorities.

Japanese authorities also reported that 4,596 people living in 1,896 households were told to evacuate their homes and 1,033 people were staying in temporary evacuation centers. Tohoku Electric Distribution Company announced that over 700 households are battling with power outages. Some train services in the region were also canceled.

The dry weather and winds in the region make extinguishing efforts difficult, says the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
