Frida Kahlo’s 1949 self-portrait “El sueño (La cama)” sold for $54.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, setting a new record for the most expensive artwork by a female artist sold at auction.
The sale surpasses Georgia O’Keeffe’s previous $44.4 million record and also becomes the highest-priced work by a Latin American artist. The painting, one of the few Kahlo works in private hands outside Mexico, was last sold in 1980. The buyer’s identity was not disclosed.
