Hafik Lake, a home to many migratory bird species in Türkiye’s Sivas province, partially froze as temperatures dropped to minus 7 degrees. Hundreds of cormorants, who came to take a break in the non-freezing parts, brought the lake back to life.
Visiting the frozen lake, Hasan Öztürk, a worker at a facility by the location, said, “Lake Hafik freezes in November-December. Now it’s frozen in January. It didn’t snow. The temperatures dropped to 7 degrees below zero. It’s getting colder now. The surface is 90 percent frozen, but a tiny area did not freeze. That area might have stayed unfrozen since cormorants are active there. They dive and eat fish and algae there.”
Another visitor, Mehmet Taş, recommended everyone to visit the place as it offers a beautiful view.
