Fukushima Disaster Victims Commemorated in Japan

A ceremony was held in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, to mark the 15th anniversary of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, local officials, survivors and relatives of victims attended the event, where a minute of silence was observed at 2:46 PM, the exact time of the earthquake.

Takaichi said the government would continue rebuilding the region and ensure the safe decommissioning of the nuclear plant. She added, “We will work with all our might to rebuild the disaster area.” The 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered the Fukushima nuclear accident, which forced mass evacuations and became the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
