Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has proposed a public referendum on the “Transparency of Foreign Influence” law after the parliament overrode her veto. Addressing protesters, Zourabichvili emphasized that the decision on the country’s future should be made by the people, not just 84 parliament members. She urged citizens to gather signatures for the referendum and highlighted the importance of youth mobilization for the upcoming elections. The controversial law was passed despite her veto, sparking fears of reduced democratic freedoms and closer ties with Russia.

Iran executed Yasin Huseynzade, who killed one and injured two at the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran in 2023. The Iranian judiciary confirmed the execution took place early in the morning.
The attack, which Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called a “terrorist act,” triggered a diplomatic crisis. Baku withdrew embassy staff, and both countries expelled diplomats. Despite tensions, the Azerbaijani Embassy reopened in July 2024. Iran and Azerbaijan remain at odds over minority rights and ties with Israel.
