German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said NATO should not take a role in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Belgium, Wadephul said NATO had not made any decision regarding responsibility for the strategic waterway.
His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump called on allies to help protect ships passing through the strait amid tensions with Iran. Trump said several countries could send warships to the region to keep the route open for global oil shipments.
